Quan Yin is Goddess of Compassion. Her name roughly translates to "she who hears the cries of the world".  Her compassion is unending as she has been graced with 1000 eyes and hands - to see all the distress in the world and to bring comfort to all those in need.  She has long been associated with the lotus flower, and is often depicted sitting or standing on one as she dispenses her endless supply of compassion.
